Do you have a dental crown installed on a tooth, and now it is causing you pain? If so, you'll want to get to the bottom of this problem so that it can be fixed. While there are a variety of different reasons for dental pain, here are 3 reasons why it could be happening with your dental crown.

Physical Trauma

The purpose of having a crown installed is to protect the tooth from becoming even more damaged. Something is likely already wrong with it, and the tooth needs additional strength by using the crown.

However, having a crown installed may not be enough to prevent the original problem from continuing to form. For instance, a fractured tooth may continue to spread. This is more likely to happen if the tooth experiences some sort of physical trauma. This can happen by chewing on something hard, like a bone in a piece of food, or being involved in an accident that involves getting hit in the face.

Have your dentist look at the tooth to find out what is happening underneath the crown. You may be told that the damage has spread due to the trauma, and now the tooth needs to be repaired again or removed.

When biting down with your teeth, the placement of all the teeth should feel very comfortable. The teeth will rest naturally on each other, and you won't feel any pain.

Be aware that a dental crown can upset the natural balance in your teeth, which will cause malocclusion. For example, the dental crown may be sticking up more than your natural teeth, creating an odd bite that makes your jaw feel painful.

This is a problem that can be corrected. Your dentist can remove the crown so that it can be adjusted, which will help your bite become aligned much better.

Gum Damage

The cause of the pain may not be coming from the crown, but the gums beneath it. The top of the tooth may have a protective covering, but you need to be brushing on the gumline to remove plaque that can lead to a gum infection. Have your dentist inspect the area for potential problems, since they can tell if you have signs of gum disease. If so, they can come up with a treatment plan to help you get rid of the problem and make the pain go away.
